GoodWiFi

Wi-Fi heat map app for iPhone

See where your Wi-Fi drops, room by room.

Hold up your phone and walk through your home. GoodWiFi draws your floor plan as you go, checks your connection every second, and paints a heat map of every floor. Then it tells you, in plain English, where the dead zones are and what to try first: move the router, or add a mesh point.

Works with any router or mesh system. No extra hardware. Android coming later.

Example GoodWiFi heat map of a one-floor home A floor plan with seven rooms. The kitchen, living room and hall are green (great). The bath and most of the bedroom are yellow (OK). The office and laundry at the far end are mostly red (poor), and one dropout is marked in the bedroom corner. Example: Main floor, how fast the router answers
  • Great < 30 ms
  • OK 30–150 ms
  • Poor > 150 ms

How it works

A Wi-Fi survey with the iPhone you already have: one walk through your home. No laptop, no extra hardware, no tapping a dot for every room.

  1. Hold the camera up and walk

The camera follows where you go, so each reading lands in the right spot, and with LiDAR the floor plan draws itself. If the camera loses sight in a dark hallway, step counting and the compass carry on.

  2. Name each room as you go

Tap Name this room and pick or type a name. Or hold the button and just say “Kitchen”. Your findings then talk about your rooms, not coordinates.

  3. Get the map and the fix

Tap Finish. You get a heat map for every floor and a short list of what’s wrong, where, and what to try first.

Generates your floor plan as you walk

No floor plan? No problem. Your Wi-Fi map lands on a real plan of your home, not a blank grid.

  • Scanned with LiDAR. On an iPhone or iPad with LiDAR, GoodWiFi traces walls, doors and windows while you survey, to scale in feet.
  • Saved for next time. Every later survey of that floor lines up with the same plan.
  • Any phone. Without LiDAR, add a photo of your floor plan, or GoodWiFi outlines the area you walked.
Example floor plan generated by GoodWiFi during a walk A floor plan of the same seven-room home, drawn as walls, doors and windows, with the dashed path the phone walked from the living room through the hall to the office and bedroom. Measures what you actually notice

Signal bars can look full while video calls freeze. GoodWiFi measures the connection itself, every second, everywhere you walk.

Catches dropouts, not just weak spots

It checks how fast your router answers and counts lost packets every second. A router that freezes for a few seconds at a time shows up as a dropout on the map, where it happened.

Internet speed in any room

Tap Speed test wherever you want a download and upload number. Results are pinned to the map, so you see the fastest and slowest rooms side by side.

Mesh Wi-Fi: coverage gap or roaming?

A “weak” room on a mesh is often a phone clinging to a far access point. GoodWiFi tells the two apart, so you don’t buy another node you don’t need.

Every floor of the house

Add as many floors as you have. When you take the stairs, GoodWiFi notices and asks if you’re upstairs now, then keeps mapping on the right floor.

Any router, any mesh brand

GoodWiFi tests the connection your phone is actually using, so it works with whatever router, mesh system or internet provider you have.

A report you can send

Share a PDF with each floor’s map, legend and findings, with your company name and logo at the top, or a spreadsheet of every reading.

Plain-English fixes for dead zones and dropouts

Below the map, GoodWiFi lists what it found, worst first. This is the example home from the top of the page.

  • Weak in the Office Router 180 ms · 8% lost Try moving the router closer or adding a mesh point here.
  • 1 dropout in the Bedroom Up to 12 s offline Something interrupts the connection here — check for interference or a far access point.
  • A bit slow in the Bedroom Router 64 ms Usually fine; video calls may stutter here.
  • Kitchen and Living room are great Under 30 ms
  • Fastest: 412 Mbps in the Living room · slowest 38 Mbps in the Office 2 speed tests

Example survey. The wording is the app’s own; the numbers are made up for illustration.

Every survey gets a verdict

Good, Fair or Poor, based on how much of the floor is slow and whether the connection dropped. Each map comes with a legend in real units, and you can switch between layers: router response, drops, internet response, speed and mesh.

Mesh Wi-Fi placement: it names the access point

“Your phone stayed on Access point 1 in the Kitchen though Access point 2 was 14 dB stronger.” Then it suggests turning on fast roaming, or moving that access point a little.

Android phones measure every access point directly. iPhones can’t scan Wi-Fi, so on iPhone these findings are estimated from where your phone switched, and labeled “estimated”.

Camera used for position only. No photos or video are saved.

The camera is for where you are, not what’s there

Walking around your home with the camera on is personal. GoodWiFi is built so nothing it sees leaves your phone.

  • The preview is blurred on purposeYou can see where you’re pointing, but faces, screens and paperwork can’t be read. No photos or video are saved.
  • Everything stays on your phoneMaps, readings and room names are stored on the device. There’s no account and nothing to sign up for.
  • Voice naming stays on the phone tooRoom names are recognized on the device, and the audio isn’t kept.
  • No ads, no analytics, no trackingApart from the tests themselves and checking your purchase, the app doesn’t talk to any server. Your neighbors’ networks aren’t stored.

Frequently asked questions

When can I get GoodWiFi?

GoodWiFi is coming soon to the App Store for iPhone. An Android version is planned for later.

How much does GoodWiFi cost?

It’s free for one place, with every measurement, heat map and finding, and your latest survey of each floor. GoodWiFi Home is a one-time $19.99 purchase for unlimited places and full survey history, yours for life. GoodWiFi Pro is $99.99 a month and adds PDF and spreadsheet reports for clients, with your company name and logo.

Do I need any special hardware?

No. Just your phone and the Wi-Fi you want to check. It works with any router or mesh brand. The automatic floor-plan scan needs an iPhone or iPad with LiDAR running iOS 17 or later; on other phones you can add a photo of your plan or go without one.

Why don’t I see signal bars or dBm on my iPhone?

Apple doesn’t let apps read Wi-Fi signal strength on iPhone. GoodWiFi measures what decides how your Wi-Fi feels instead: how fast the router answers, lost packets, dropouts and internet speed. On Android it also shows signal strength from each access point.

How accurate is the map?

With the camera up, readings are placed along the path you actually walked. When the camera can’t see, GoodWiFi continues on step counting and the compass, and tells you when to tap your spot to line things up again.

It’s built to answer “which rooms are bad, and why”, the question that decides where a router or mesh point goes.

How long does a survey take?

As long as it takes to walk through each room once at a normal pace with the phone held up. You can pause, leave a survey unfinished and continue it later.

Does the camera record my home?

No. The camera is used to work out where you are. The preview is blurred, and no photos or video are saved. On LiDAR devices, the scan keeps only the outline of walls, doors and windows, never images.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. There’s no account and no cloud sync; your surveys stay on your phone. Speed tests send test data to and from Cloudflare’s speed-test servers. Purchases go through the App Store or Google Play. See the privacy policy for details.

Will it show me where to put a mesh Wi-Fi point?

Yes. Survey before you buy: if one end of the house is poor, that’s where a mesh point goes. Survey again after setup to check it worked. If you already have a mesh, GoodWiFi can tell whether a weak room is a real coverage gap or a phone holding on to the wrong access point.

Can I use it for more than one building, or for clients?

Yes. GoodWiFi Home covers unlimited places with full history, so it’s enough for your own home, a second home or family. If you survey for clients, GoodWiFi Pro adds PDF and spreadsheet reports with your company name and logo to hand over.
